I had no idea this kind of thing still happened, but apparently there were 25 acts of piracy in 2007. Shocked

I do hope ~COSTAL~ wasn't involved. Cool

I heard about this as well. When you hear the word pirate you automatically think Pirates of the Carribbean, parrots, peg-legs and eyepatches but obviously they're a lot more sophisticated nowadays. Think about it though, once you're out on the ocean there isn't a lot of protection from an attack, and if a ship is more powerful than yours you're going to be caught. It's scary really.

I heard about this a couple of years ago when there was a special on it. The East coast of Africa, particularly Somalia is especially bad, and many shipping companies won't even venture into those waters.

Yeah, the word piracy always carries images of Jolly Rodger, no mercy and the smell of blood and gunpowder. Unfortunately, reality is much less romantic...

Somali pirates end hostage-taking peacefully: French officials

Quote:
PARIS, April 11, 2008 (AFP) - Pirates have freed the 30 crew from a French luxury sailing ship which was seized off Somalia one week ago and had been tailed by the French Navy, officials said Friday.

Quote:
Details of the release were expected to be made public following a meeting between Sarkozy and the hostages' families later Friday. A French official, who asked not to be named, said: "Not a shot was fired. It all took place calmly."

I'm sure that was a relief to the hostages to be released. The fact that they ended it all without a shot says volumes for talking things out before storming in guns ablaze.

All's well that ends well.

It seems like they're actually trying to do something to address the situation now.

yep.. it's quite rife around those areas! Piracy is something you only tend to see in swashbuckling movie - so you don't really consider that it's still going on today, but yup, it is.
