I have been induced, much against my better judgement, to join my friend at her aquarobics class tomorrow evening. I've been wanting to take up some regular exercise for a while but I'm not convinced that this is the right choice for me. Still, nothing ventured nothing gained so I'll give it a whirl.

Thought it might be a good idea to ask everyone here what exercise classes they do, if any, and whether they would recommend them?

If watching a couple of daft birds attempt to drown themselves in the pursuit of physical fitness is something that appeals to you, then by all means, do feel free to attend.

Who knows we may inspire you to join us. Wink

Apart from running for trains and up escalators, I don't involve myself in many pursuits of the execise variety, although I pay a monthly sub to the local sports centre. Must remember to cancel that at some point. But, in my last job, I did partake of this aerobic kickboxing class. A girl I worked with qualified as an intructor of it and set up a class, so I kinda got emotionally blackmailed into joining it to lend support. Bloody hell - it was tough going! Shocked Thankfully it got quite popular and I could stop going. Laughing

I've taken aerobics classes before, but right now I have a couple of different work-out DVD's I use at home. My husband calls it dancing in front of the TV. I like doing them both equally as well.

My husband and I are also taking swing and ballroom dance classes (that takes up 2 hours a week) which gives us a pretty good work out and we also take our dogs for a daily walk. Actually my husband is religious about taking the dogs, I join him a fair amount of time but it translates to at least a one to two mile walk when I do go.

I used to do aquarobics. It was quite good but I'm terrible when it comes to exercising .... it's always feels like a chore.

I did enjoy a brisk walk in the evenings .... until I fell off a curb and broke my ankle Sad

Oh, God, me too. I just don't want to spend the time - I have a lot of other things that I would rather be doing that I don't have enough time for! Hopefully when it gets warmer, I can walk at lunchtime. Of course, that means giving up time for these boards! Confused

Well I've been to my aquarobics class and I didn't drown, Laughing although I believe I brought a fair bit of the pool home with me. Rolling Eyes

Actually, I must say it was more enjoyable than I anticipated and also not the doddle I thought it would be. I'll probably go again next week.....mind you, the proof of the pudding will be tomorrow when I find out how much I'm going to ache.

I wish I had the discipline to go to the gym regularly but I'm an expert at finding excuses not to go. I much prefer walking our neighborhood 2-mile circle most days but that's not really much of a workout. On Sunday mornings, we "religiously" go for a much longer hike on one of the many trails nearby. It's beautiful this time of year with all the flowers coming into bloom.

I haven't tried aquarobics, VG, but I'd heard good things about it.

OK, for my next experiment I have been convinced, again against my better judgement, to join my sister on her Saturday morning 'step aerobics' class.

Having not done one of these for a few years I asked what does one wear for step aerobics these days. If she had mentioned the word lycra it would have been a non-starter. However, she said I would need just trainers, leggings and a T-shirt. Trainers I can do but she seemed highly amused that I don't have either leggings or a T-shirt. Shocked What's so funny about that? I don't do leggings and T-shirts, they're just not me. Confused

I have, today, purchased suitable attire for this event at the exorbitant sum of £50.....it had better bloody be worth it. Evil or Very Mad

I shall report my findings in due course.

I have to report that the 'step aerobics' was not exactly a rip-roaring success. I was reasonably confident that I would be able to cope stamina-wise but was completely confounded by the sheer complexity of the steps. Shocked

I was convinced that we had somehow, inadvertently, wandered in to a modern dance masterclass. I found myself in a perpetual state of either being on the wrong foot or facing the wrong direction. The instructors vain attempts at yelling 'rebound', travel the world' or 'Elvis' sadly fell on deaf ears as I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about. Embarassed The only time I felt vaguely competent was doing the abdominal exercises. Even I couldn't go far wrong with lying flat on my back doing stomach crunches although it didn't take long for me to reach the conclusion that I wished I could get away with claiming that I didn't know what to do. Rolling Eyes

After the class, I confessed to the instructor that I had spent most of it waving my arms like a demented windmill whilst jogging on the spot and trying to figure out what everyone else was doing. She told me not to worry. It was only to be expected as it was an advanced class that had been running for 4 years. Shocked

I can only assume it was my sister's payback for some terrible torment I inflicted on her as a child. Evil or Very Mad

You have my sympathies VG. Even on a good day in my beginning dance class I haven't a clue as to what I ought to be doing half of the time. But it makes for a really funny story. Especially the visual of a demented windmill. The real question is will you go back?

Not to that particular class, no. Laughing

I may try and find a beginners class nearer home though. Very Happy

I encourage you all to do as much regualr excercise-but keep it regular. I have since i was 16, so for 5 years, pretty much wherever i am in the world, gone to the gym for 2 hrs on a monday wed andfri, and done taekwondo on the other days-and now that i am in america, im so grateful because if i relied on simply eating right i would be a physical mess, as its so expensive to eat healthilly here, so im glad i have this long established pattern f excercise.

I agree Mpls Druid - instead of these expensive classes, VG should just try to walk 2 miles each day.... then with a bit of luck by the end of the month she'll be 60 miles away...... result!

Very Happy

Being 60 miles away from you would be a result indeed! Cool
