Does anyone else think this method of commemorating what Easter is about is somewhat too extreme?

It does seem a tad extreme, though in some way quite admirable. Shows how seriously they take their faith. I've been considering this over the past week or so - during my 40 alcohol-free days - just how lax an attitude we have towards Lent when compared, for example, to the way Moslems treat Ramadan. They REALLY fast. We Christians just give up chocolate or something (usually deliberately picking something we know we'll barely miss - if at all). I know it's fashionable to be negative about Islam but I can't help feeling, as a Christian, that there's a lot we could learn from them, from their discipline.

Blue, I have similar feelings about Muslim women in the western world. They are devout on a level that not many westerners would subject themselves to when it comes to their dress. Especially in summer. I can't imagine having to cover head to toe on the hottest days or on the most humid days.

I think the scientific theory is that the colour black absorbs sunlight and keeps it away from the body. White does the same job but by reflecting the sunlight.

What I have always heard is that black absorbs light and its heat, and white reflects it, so that if you wear black on a very hot day, you will be hotter, and white will make you cooler.

That's what I've always been lead to believe Juana. That's why black cars are not so popular down here in the heat.

It's supposed to be because white is actually made up of all the colors in some way, while black is the absence of any color, I think.

White light is all of the colors. White the color is an abscence of other colors. Black the color is all of the colors.

It is true that white fabric will reflect light and make one feel cooler. Black fabric will absorb light and one will feel warmer. Why someone would feel cooler in the desert wrapped in a black bedsheet is beyond me, it goes against all common wisdom.

Maybe they're just used to the heat. It could also be that it's loose enough to allow air to circulate underneath.
