I support Ron Paul for President. The groundswell of support is really something to behold. On Guy Fawkes day, he raised 4 million dollars in 24 hours, a record for a Republican. Today, to commemorate the Boston Tea Party, hundreds of thousands of individual contributions are pouring in. He's currently just shy of the 16 million dollar mark, and the night is young.
The money counter changes almost as fast as the national debt calculator:

Who is he ? I never heard about him - which is not that surprising, given here in France the media coverage of the US 2008 elections is limited to Obama VS Clinton for the Democrats, and to a lesser extent Giuliani VS McCain for the Republicans, who are leading the polls I think.
Unfortunately, independently of their qualities, politicians who are not famous enough stand little chance I'm affraid. Do you think he has a chance to catch up before the official nomination (when is it, by the way?) _________________ Sit on the banks of the river and wait for the corpse of your enemy. - Indian proverb. |

Ron Paul is a Republican with Libertarian leanings. He's the kind of Republican I was raised to be and was, up until 2000. What I mean is conservative spending, isolationist policy and giving the power back to the States.
The GOP in its present form has alienated me and so I began labeling myself as an Independent around 8 years ago. I'm a mixture of left and right, and believe that the country should continue down the middle like it was doing. George Bush has pushed the U.S. towards fascism (in my opinion) and we need a Libertarian to pull it back to the center. I actually agree with Ron Paul on issues outside of his anti-war stance. Even though I believe we should pour lots of money into educating our children, the Department of Education needs to go. It's a bureacratic and ineffective behemoth and would be best administered by the States. What we have now encourages mediocrity.
Ron Paul says to let the States compete with each other with their laws and policy, just as the US Constitution intended. I respect that and think it's just what this country needs right now.
Can he win? I can only hope. I know that raising $10 million in a week from over a hundred thousand individual donors has to mean something. Last Sunday he raised $6 million in one day, a record in US history. How can it not be irresistable that a politician arrives on the scene without already being bought and paid for? If you watch his interviews, he demonstrates every time that he's too smart to be blown off course by irrelevant questions.
This interview is from just a few days ago where "FauxNews" interviews him on why he didn't air a "warm and fuzzy" ad. Ron Paul replied that he has a "warm and fuzzy" message. He's inspiring.

The Iowa caucus is in two weeks. I guess we'll find out. So far, Ron Paul has won the majority of the so-called straw polls. You just never know. |
