What would you vote for as America's finest city? I know that is the slogan for San Diego, which would be my personal choice. It's a damn shame it's also one of the most expensive places to live!

Copper Harbor Michigan and surrounding area. The thimbleberry is all around and what a delightfull jam it makes. It is a rare berry that you can find few places in the world. One of the reasons big business has not destroyed the land.
Here are the Northern lights

In terms of major cities I have been to Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, New York, Richmond, Nashville, Memphis, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Biloxi and Gulfport. I have a particular fondness for New Orleans but I don't know that it is still a beautiful city.
Places I still want to visit include Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia and Seattle. There are others on my list so I think it may take some time. |

New York, no question...I loathe the countryside , no matter where it is. Mind, that's New York City, not the state. The bit my husband came from is a dump...nothing but grass and stuff for miles around. Horrible. _________________ In Manchester, did Tony Blair

Classic citygirl, eh, Lil?
I'm used to a mix. My hometown had a population of a milion people, which made it a larger midsized city in the US. I grew up within spitting distance of cornfields, but also used to having the convenience of shops.
Ofah, believe it or not, I have never been to Michigan, even though it was only a couple hours drive from where I lived. Just never had any reason to go. |

That would probably be my second favorite city - Washington DC. I could never get enough of the place when I visited. |

| Oh well you should of traveled up to the UP. Nothing like it. Far from a dump. In fact the very opposite. I've seen my fair share of dumps in cities but never in the UP. |

VG Here is a link
http://www.uptravel.com/Default.asp
My family farm is in Keweenaw and Baraga County. It is very cold in the winter but the rest of the year is near perfect. I know you have traveled to cities but there is nothing like seeing nature that is still pure and not destroyed by man. The waterfalls are amazing and the Northern lights in the sky are breath taking. |

I have a friend here who was from Sheboygan which is on the northern tip of the Lower P. Some years ago her father died during the winter months. They could not bury him until the summer when the ground had thawed. At first I was quite shocked when she told me, but then it only makes sense when you think about it.
In other words VG, It's bloody cold up there....not for you and me! |

Flights between New York and Florida are frequent and relatively inexpensive so if you like both cities, you'll have no problems.
What kind of work will you be doing? |

I have to admit that some of our happier memories have been in smaller places like Gulfport, MI, Williamsburg, VA and Lake Conroe, TX
We also loved driving up the Mississippi Delta stopping at some of the tiny little towns along the way. |

I loved it in New Orleans, spent a fortnight there in 1990. Met some fine people. very chilled and relax and lots of fun. Good food, music and such a mix of architecture. I'd certainly recommend it.
Here's me having a shoeshine.

| I got to go to two conferences in New Orleans. The first time, I went alone, the hotel was not in a great location, and the conference, with all its related parties, took up all my time anyway. The second time, I went with someone else, we were right on Bourbon Street, and we made a point of getting to know the French Quarter. We went out for dinner three times, walked Bourbon Street every evening, stopping at various places, and did a walking tour that I printed off the Web. The conferences were great, too. Bill Clinton was a keynote speaker at one, and the parties were great, especially the big closing bashes at the Superdome. So much was going on - Mardi Gras parades, local musical acts, rides, games, and the highlights were the concerts - Earth, Wind, and Fire at the first, and Gladys Knight at the second. Lots of great memories!!! |

Ooh! Coffee and beignets at Cafe du Monde! I could eat a few right now.
My daughter attended a conference there in March and had a great time but said the police were constantly reminding them not to stray too far from the main streets. People who've been there recently to help with the rebuilding are disgusted at the lack of resources being directed there. |

That brings back memories. We used to walk around taking photos then sit in the Cafe Du Monde relaxing with the coffee and beignets while they 1 hour photo shop did it's duty.
I took this pic sitting there, Matt has the bag with the photos in his hand.
New Orleans is like any other City, it has it's problems and povety. No one with any sense wanders too freely in a City they don't know, especially at night. There's plenty to see in the main areas without needing to go to far off the beaten track. _________________ If it ain't broke................hit it again. |

Those beignets were divine and I loved sitting outside with my cup of coffee reading a book or simply people watching.
We were there a few years before Katrina and it was fairly safe to walk around the main streets although a policeman told us not to venture into Armstrong Park at any time of the day. We went over to Algiers and that was a tad scary, even in daylight. My daughter was told that the crime rate is much higher since Katrina and NO is having difficulty attracting anywhere near as many conventions as they did prior to Katrina. Let's hope more funds and resources are directed there. |

Very pretty, Suzy!
Yes, poppycock, I do hope that they're getting everything they need to move on from the tragedy, though I do have my doubts. When Hurrican Katrina hit, I was very affected by it, not just because I love the city (from a distance) but also because it was so tragic. My heart really went out to those people, and still does. |

Katrina struck New Orleans just 2 weeks before we were due to fly there. At first I just couldn't believe it. We had been in Florida the year before when Hurricane Frances struck followed closely by Hurricane Jeanne. We thought the damage would be the same as we'd experienced then but when we saw the devastation we were just stunned.
Like you, Michele, it affected us greatly. Not just because we had to make last minute changes to our travel plans but because we had met some wonderful people on our 3 previous trips there and were concerned for their safety. We have since heard from some of them but not all and may never know their fate.
The only 'silver' lining to the cloud was that the last minute change to our travel arrangements resulted in us spending a week at Lake Conroe, Texas where we were able to spend a very enjoyable evening with our own Silverminicooper and her husband Klaus. _________________ Girls are like phones. | We came to know a number of the evacuees when they were in our city for a few months. I was amazed at their good spirits and they were so appreciative of the help they received while here. The ones we helped moved back to NO after a few months. There was no place like home for them and I could understand that. |

VG....love the pun!
We were married in New Orleans 33 years ago when we lived there. I always loved it. Last June we stayed there on our way back from Florida to visit friends. We too, were stunned at the damage over a year later. The footage you see on the television does not come even close to describing it.
This is where I worked at that time...St. Louis Hotel Check out the 'dining' link and their restaurant. Unfortunately it suffered a great deal damage during the storm and only the hotel was open and not the restaurant when we were there last year. Klaus was the Chef at the Fairmont.
BTW, you can buy the begnet mix in most supermarkets (I know Kroger sells it) and they are just as good as the real thing. It is Cafe DuMond's own mix. I also have some of their wonderful coffee. |
