As sickening as this is, I hate to admit that it's no longer shocking the way it once was. |

| I have so many questions. I also can't believe it and feel sickened. You both described how I feel. |

It is an utterly appalling tragedy, especially with the eighth anniversary of the Columbine Massacre upon us. Now surpassing the 1966 University of Texas Massacre, this awful event is the second deadliest school massacre after the 1927 Bath School Disaster in Michigan and the deadliest shooting incident in US history, ahead of the 1991 Luby's Massacre, also in Texas.
I know that our Foreign Secretary has made a statement and Her Majesty the Queen - who is due to visit Virginia in May the celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement - has released a statement expressing Her shock. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this calamity.

| You guys have probably read, the hot debate now is whether the authorities should have had him put away since he showed signs of severe mental illness. I'm afraid I agree with the criticism. We need to be more proactive about the issue. Also, those gun laws need to be changed! |

| Another step in the right direction would be if women were more willing to press charges when they are being stalked. The two women that Cho stalked did report it, and the police were made aware, but they refused to press charges. If they had, it would have been on his record, and he most likely would not have been sold the guns. Of course, he might have then obtained them illegally anyway, but preventing criminals from legally buying guns is at least a step in the right direction. But the charges have to be brought; stalkers can be very dangerous, so go the extra mile and get it on their records. |

| I hadn't thought of that, but yeah, you're right. The solution to that might be better education. By a woman's very nature, it's hard to press charges against someone, especially when they've only caused you mental distress. I've had a stalker before, and I didn't press charges because he was so pitiful. I felt sorry for him, and didn't want to give him a criminal record when I wasn't sure it was a crime or not. My mother wound up doing my dirty work for me and got him to leave me alone for good. It wasn't even something I'd ever encouraged, just someone who saw me working one day and became obsessed. Anyway, if I'd known that a person like that could go on to commit more evil acts, I might have been more tough. I'm glad that the police are taking it more seriously these days, and I'll bet that will improve now that this VT tragedy has occurred. |

Check out this e-mail sent to students in Colorado.
| Quote: | TO: CU Residence Hall Students
FROM: John Fox, CU Residence Life
DATE: April 20, 2007
Dear residence hall students:
We wanted to let you know of an incident that has occurred last night in Kittredge
West Hall. The University of Colorado police department (UCPD) received an
anonymous call regarding a resident who was in possession of weapons in his room.
Upon investigation, UCPD arrested the student for possession of a handgun, a
shotgun, and several hundred rounds of ammunition. The student was arrested
for Unlawful Possession of Deadly Weapons on Campus (2 counts - one for each
weapon) and three counts of Unlawful Conduct on Public Property.
The Regents of the University of Colorado have passed laws that apply to all
campus property banning all firearms from campus, unless possessed by University
Police Officers. In order to accommodate a student who wishes to participate
in shooting sports such as hunting and target shooting, UCPD will store weapons
for the student who resides on campus. Students check their weapon(s) in with
the university police upon arrival at campus with the weapon and check out with
the weapon when leaving campus to participate in a shooting activity. This student
did also have a weapon in storage with UCPD under this program.
The student has been summarily suspended from the university and will not be
permitted back in the residence halls or attend class until the judicial hearing
has been completed and decision made about the case. The student was also excluded
from campus and cannot be on campus for any reason.
We encourage you also to continue to watch out for each other and practice the
security measures that we have recently sent out in other emails. If at any
time, any suspicious behavior or persons is observed or any suspicious information
is received, please call CU police immediately at 911 and report that information.
In light of the anniversary of the tragedy at Columbine High School eight years
ago today, and recent events at Virginia Tech, we realize that many students
will be impacted by this information on our own campus. We want to reassure
residents that UCPD as well as the staff of residence life are responding to
these types of situations quickly to help provide the environment that all students
need to be successful at CU. The residence life professional staff members are
available on the residence hall floors and in their offices to answer questions
and address concerns that you may have regarding this recent event. We encourage
you to use the residence life staff or the other campus resources listed below
if you have any concerns or just want to talk about the situation. We are here
to help you!
We also encourage you to call your parents and give them the information about
this situation. There will be a press release and media will be on campus to
report about the incident. However, your parents would probably appreciate hearing
about this from you.

| That's really heartbreaking. On one hand, I think they could have done more, but on the other hand, I understand they thought they already had their guy (the first girl's gunloving boyfriend.) I hope history doesn't repeat itself in this instance. |
