PETA and animal-rights activists are calling for the guards to do away with the bear skins and to adopt fake fur or a new design altogether. They are approaching Viviene Westwood to design a replacement.
Ricky Gervais has written to the Prime Minister arguing that the use of real fur is inexcusable today.

Suggesting that the bearskins be made of fake fur is one thing and I can see a case for that (although I would still be in favour of staying with tradition) but why do these people have to mess with the design.
Yes there is a reason why a new design wouldn't become iconic.....BECAUSE IT'S BLOODY NEW NOT BEEN LIKE THAT FOR CENTURIES!!! Frankly I'm fed up with people who think that they can improve on tradition. _________________ Girls are like phones. Absolutely right VG! And while we are at it, lets get back to sending children up chimneys where they deserve to be, remove the vote from women (as they have no idea about politics anyway - leave that to them men who know best) and revert to wearing 1940's dresses, silk stockings and corsets......
(actually maybe that last bit might be ok..... ) _________________ .

Also while we're at it we should go back to dumping senile old gits into mental institutions where they belong. _________________ Girls are like phones. We love to be held and talked to, but if you press the wrong button you'll be disconnected! |

I thought we already did that - isn't it more commonly referred to as the House of Lords? _________________ .

Typical of the kind of mindless tosh I've come to expect from those morons at PETA. For a start, I've seen the faux fur prototypes and they all, without exception, look ghastly. The idea of the Foot Guards putting aside the bearskins that have formed part of their ceremonial uniform for two centuries in exchange for a new headdress designed by Dame Vivienne Westwood makes my blood run cold. It is just the latest in a series of assaults on our history and heritage.
Apart from anything, even if the Ministry of Defence stopped using real fur, it wouldn't save the life of a single bear. Inuit hunters cull 40,000 Canadian black bears annually, out of a population of more than a million! This is hardly a species on the brink of extinction. Despite what PETA would like people to believe, no bear is killed specifically to produce what they term "silly hats". The amount of bearskins purchased by the British Government is miniscule against the numbers that the Canadian Government authorises to be culled each year. But, again, even if the Canadian Government stopped culling the bears, we could survive quite easily on furs derived from roadkill! A single pelt can furnish two or sometimes even three of the ceremonial hats and, if properly looked after, a good bearskin can last for the better part of a century! Indeed, many of the bearskins currently in service are well over 100 years old.
No doubt the Government are ready to cave in to yet another gobby pressure group, making a lot of noise and talking a lot of sentimentalist claptrap. It's all lies and propaganda and frankly I'm growing pretty sick of these numpties hectoring us all and trying to dictate how we live our lives: Don't smoke, don't drink, don't eat meat, don't wear fur, don't hunt, don't drive your car, don't put too much salt on your food, don't do this, don't do that, blah, blah, blah... These people want to try living their own damn lives instead of dictating to other people how to live theirs.

LOL Blue!! Although you and I disagree on subjects like this (ie fox hunting!) I do have to agree with you on this. If the bears were being killed specifically for the 'silly hats', then maybe I would have a problem with it.
