| Quote: | Secrets of James Bond's success with women unravelled
According to a new study, men who are narcissistic, thrill-seeking liars and all round "bad boys" tend to have the greatest success finding more sexual partners.
Scientists believe that the root of their good fortune is simply that they try it on with more women, therefore by the law of averages are likely to ensnare more.
They say these type of men adopt a more predatory, scatter gun approach to conquests and have more of a desire to try new things which helps when it comes to meeting women, according to the study highlighted by New Scientist magazine. |
I wonder how much this little study cost to discover what most women could have told them for free.

Sometimes I think the scientists who present these studies just don't have a life so while their findings seem like common sense to us, they are always a surprise to them. And you know they spent a large amount of money (always someone else's) on it.
Next thing they'll come up with is that men like beer & big breasts. |

Well, now that you mention it...
Science proves that bikinis turn men into boobs
Believe it or not, there is an honest-to-goodness scientific basis for using sexy women to sell cars, etc.!
| Quote: | You may have known this all along, but now it has been demonstrated scientifically: bikinis make men stupid.
This month’s issue of the Journal of Consumer Research features a paper titled “Bikinis Instigate Generalized Impatience in Intertemporal Choice,” which is a neuroeconomist’s (definition in a moment) way of saying that men don’t make good decisions while checking out pretty girls in bikinis. |
Try saying that paper title five times fast! |

Maybe a study should be commissioned to find out what it is that makes them want to confirm these things. |

You can't make yourself into a bad boy, you either just are or aren't one; and us girls know the difference.

And the answer would still be a surprise to the researchers. |

I remember about 20 or 25 years ago there was a study out to see what would happen if you got shot in the head. The military wanted to find out how long it would take for a person to die and if they would be able to spill any secrets. How freakin' stupid!
That's right up there with studying the mating habits of marshmallows. |

I cannot believe they spend money on this shit, when there are so many more important things to discover. PHD's often get paid good money to research this sort of thing, the mind boggles ! _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------

I feel that VG is besmirching my snow-white reputation. (though actually, now that she mentions it....)

Actually, whether the answer is obvious or not depends on the question asked. As for the first sudy mentionned by VG, the aim was not so much to check that James Bond has success with women -which is quite different from "do women like bad boys", by the way- and which did not actually come as a "surprise" even to the researchers - than to understand why. In fact this study fits into an evolutionary approach of psychology that tries to understand behaviours in terms of social benefits. And in this context, the benefits of being selfish, narcissistic, impulsive and manipulator - all usually considered negative traits - for establishing romantic relationships are not that evident.
As for the paper quoted by Juana, the problem again is not so much to confirm that bikinis help sell cars (that, advertisers understood it long ago), but to understand why. I mean, how does that work, how come erotic stimuly make one more willing to buy cars or candy bars or whatever ? As the article recalls, previous studies have focused on whether association with sexy images made a product more appealing. This one instead focused on whether it influences the decision to buy something not too expensive now, or save money for something more expensive, later (*). Also, previous research have investigated specific effects - how exposure to food stimuli increase impatience for food reward - but here the effect is not specific.
Of course in this case there are both fundamental aspects of this research (understand human behaviour) and practical aspects (in advertising - part of the money that fund such studies actually comes from firms...)

I hope I helped answer this question
(*) In their introduction the researchers mention older findings on this issue of costs and benefits: | Quote: | | In a typical experiment, a child is offered a less preferred reward and is confronted with the dilemma to wait 15 min and receive a more preferred reward or forego the more preferred reward and immediately receive just the less preferred reward. When the rewards are out of sight, 75% of the children wait 15 minutes to obtain the more preferred reward. However, when the rewards are exposed, the mean delay time drops from more than 11 minutes to about 1 minute. None of the children is capable of resisting temptation or delaying gratification when the rewards are within reach (Mischel and Ebbesen 1970). |
