|
|
| Quote: | WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Georgia's Parole and Pardon Board has denied a condemned inmate's request for clemency, paving the way for William Earl Lynd to die by injection at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
William Earl Lynd faces execution on Tuesday by the state of Georgia.
1 of 2 Lynd, convicted of a 1988 murder, had hoped to avoid the dubious distinction of becoming the first person executed in the United States in more than seven months.
Georgia is poised to resume capital punishment after the Supreme Court in April voted to uphold Kentucky's lethal injection protocols. Executions had been on hold across the country since the high court agreed to hear a challenge to the injection method last September.
Lynd still has legal appeals pending, including one with the Georgia Supreme Court.
About a dozen states have announced they would resume capital punishment in the next several months. |
A disappointing outcome although not an unsurprising one.

This is deeply disappointing and downright depressing.
America is supposed to be a beacon of freedom and progress to the rest of the world, yet they continue a practice that the rest of the civilised world rightly regards as barbaric.

Well its the only western country and along with Japan, one of only two countries regarded as 'civilised' that still practices capital punishment.
The other countries that practice capital punishment are dictatorships, theocracies and those with poor civil rights/human rights records. _________________ http://www.realradioyorkshire.co.uk/

You have to ask yourselves whether Americans really feel comfortable being on the opposite side of the argument to their English-speaking allies in the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand - not to mention the whole of Europe - and instead occupying space on the same list as countries such as the People's Republic of China, Syria, Pakistan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Somalia and The Sudan.
The Governor of Georgia should bear in mind that if he ever attended an international summit of world leaders defending the death penalty he would find himself sharing a platford with Colonel Gaddafi, Kim Jong-Il, Robert Mugabe and the Ayatollah.
