As Many as 10,000 Dead in Burma Cyclone
| Quote: | Residents line up to get drinking water in Yangon, 05 May 2008.
Burma's military government says more than 10,000 people may have died during Cyclone Nargis, which hit the nation on Saturday.
Officials gave the revised estimate Monday, as information continued to come in from outlying areas.
Officials say thousands of other people are missing, while hundreds of thousands are without shelter. The prices of food and fuel have risen dramatically. The government has declared the city of Rangoon and five central and southern states, Yangon, Ayeyawaddy, Bago, Mon and Karen disaster areas |

Yet the military government is still concentrating it's efforts on the constitutional referendum in Saturday. Surely, the plight of the nation could be given a higher priority than that? _________________ Girls are like phones. | Quote: | Officials fear another dramatic rise in Myanmar death toll
Associated Press - May 7, 2008 4:53 AM ET
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - A U.N. official predicts the casualty figure could rise "dramatically" beyond the latest figure given by officials in cyclone stricken Myanmar.
At least 22,000 are dead and tens of thousands more are missing.
U.N. officials have declared the Irrawaddy delta region a "major disaster" with bodies floating around in the water and international groups struggling to deliver aid.
Workers have been able to start distributing essential relief supplies in the region, including water purification tablets, mosquito nets, plastic sheeting and basic medical supplies. But heavily flooded areas are accessible only by boat.
The price of bottled water, rice and cooking oil in Myanmar has soared since the weekend storm. |
The situation in Mayanmar goes from bad to worse with no end in sight. _________________ Girls are like phones. We love to be held and talked to, but if you press the wrong button you'll be disconnected! |

Don't call it that. It's Burma. They junta changed it.
There is a duel tragedy happening in Burma right now. The first was the cyclone and the second is happening right now, as the generals obstruct the relief effort.

They don't give a shit about their people. The generals feel nothing but contempt for the peasants. And, like all paranoid military regimes, they're loathe to allow Westerners into the country at all, less stories filter out about their many, many abuses and atrocities. They will resist to the last moment and, in the meantime, thousands will die.

Blue, do you think, maybe, this will be a catalyst for the people to rise up and overthrow the junta? It won't be pretty, but has to be done, sooner or later.
And, thank you - it's always been, and still is BURMA! |

| Like Silver I was wondering if this would give rise to a revolt by the people. I also wonder if the people in the other parts of the country which were untouched by the cyclone are unaware of what is happening. They have to know something is going on, perhaps not to the extent that we know, but there have to be reports. I'm curious to see if it has an effect on how the populace votes on ratifying their constitution today. But as we have seen displayed all too often as of late, just because the election goes against what the ruling party wants doesn't mean things actually change to reflect that. |

KW, I have been wondering much the same thing. I don't know just how many have TV's, radios and such and can watch/hear what goes on, but I guess even if they do, it will be run by the junta.
I watched a video on the news showing the military handing out relief packages - like they came from them. Bastards! |

Yeah, and they had their names stamped all over the things too. Quite magnaminous of them. I hope it just sears into the people's brains who they need to go after first when the shit hits the fan (provided of course they get through this alive - prayers for them all). |

Sadly, I doubt it. 'Rising up' sounds far easier from the outside. The Burmese are a beaten, broken people. They simply haven't the strength to rise up against the Army. Armies are supposed to protect their people but in the perverse world that is Burma, it is the Army that keeps the Burmese people down.

| Quote: | | UN warns that second Cyclone could hit Burma in next 24 hours |
| Quote: | Fighting for their lives with only meagre supplies of food, clean water and medical aid reaching them, the two million Burmese left homeless by Cyclone Nargis may face a fresh pounding by the elements.
Citing an alarming new forecast by the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), the United Nations disaster response arm has warned that a new cyclone may currently be forming above Burma and could make landfall within the next 24 hours.
The forecast came as the Red Cross revised upwards its death toll estimate, announcing that as many as 127,990 may have died in the catastrophe. |
As the death toll rises it seems the end is still not in sight for this beleaguered country. _________________ Girls are like phones. We love to be held and talked to, but if you press the wrong button you'll be disconnected! |

At least Asia. It's not a good time to be there.
It is good to see that the Chinese aren't letting any moss grow under them and are doing their best to halp the victims of the earthquake. You'd think Burma would at least learn by example. |
