Just watched this movie on DVD. Despite being panned by the critics I thought it wasn't half bad. My only criticism would be excessive use of CGI throughout the movie. It seems that the skill of developing believable mutants, aliens, ghosts etc is lost.

Oddly enough... just as you mention this movie, there's a short review of it in the Metro this morning. Bit of a mixed review, but I think I might like it. Might get that out at some point. |

I haven't seen the movie, but from the commercials I was wondering if it is a remake of the Vincent Price movie The Last Man on Earth (or some title like that)?
I like Will Smith, so I hope it ends up on cable sooner or later. On the other hand, I am not crazy about zombie movies, and it looks like one of those. |

| I saw in the discount theatre and thought that it was pretty good. I don't mind the CGI stuff, it made the movie more fun for me, especially the hunting scenes with the deer. |

Yes, it is a re-make of The Last Man On Earth. In fact, it is based on a 1954 novel by Richard Matheson and is the third film adaptation - the 1964 version with Vincent Price being the first. There was also a film called The Omega Man in 1971, which starred the late Charlton Heston and was also based on the book, which is actually called I Am Legend.
I thought it was a good film with my admirable qualities and Will Smith is very good in it but, overall, I would say it represented a missed opportunity and I was mildly disappointed, especially given that the project had been in development since 1994 (Warner Bros have owned the film rights since 1970). Originally, Tom Cruise and Michael Douglas were considered to star in the film, with Sir Ridley Scott directing. By 1997, the studio were pushing to make it an Arnold Schwarzenegger film and - incredibly - Sir Ridley and Mr Schwarzenegger had actually finalised negotiations before the project was pulled over budgetary concerns. In 1998, director Rob Bowman was attached to the project but decided to direct Reign of Fire instead (which was a pile of rubbish!). In 2002, Mr Schwarzenegger stepped in as producer and started negotiations with Michael Bay to direct and Mr Smith to star but the project was shelved because the President of Warner Bros, Alan Horn, disliked the script. Then, in 2004, Akiva Goldsman stepped in to produce. Originally, Guillermo del Toro was slated to direct but he turned it down to direct the upcoming Hellboy II: The Golden Army (which I can't wait for, as I loved the first film). Mr Goldsman then offered the project to Francis Lawrence, who directed Constantine (which Mr Goldsman also produced).
Can you imagine how crap an 'Arnie' version would have been?
