My hubby is on a five day firefighting course this week. He is an offshore Electrical Inspector in the Oil and Gas Industry and is required to attend regular survival and other courses as part of his job.

Yesterday the men had to 'escape' from a mock up helicopter crash in the 'sea'. ( A huge purpose built swimming pool) They have to assume certain brace positions, count up to six and then kick the windows out to escape and swim out.

The instructor told my hubby about some Saudi Arabians he had had to train the previous week. The 'helicopter' 'ditched' with the men inside, and he waited at the side of the tank for the men to emerge. All the while, while the mock up is submerged, the instructor was counting too. ,Five, Six, Seven, Eight, nine...at this point he hits the emergency button and brings the 'helicopter back up to the surface. And there they were still strapped in.

They were helped out, given oxygen and asked why they hadn't done as instructed...counted up to six and escaped...They replied that it was Allah's will, if it had been Allah's will for them to die they would have died, but it was Allah's will that the instructor should save them. !!! What do you do in a situation like that..not only did they put themselves at risk they put the instructor and rescue team at risk, they had to swim down to untrap them.

I said that they should have been kicked off the course, if they couldn't follow procedure and instruction as they are a danger to everyone on board the helicopter.

I absolutely agree with you Jen. What a bunch of bloody idiots!

The trouble is that kind of attitude doesn't only affect them but the lives of all those with them as well.

Still at least we know what to do with that guy we can't deport (name escapes me at the moment). Just submerge him in a helicopter.....job done.

What cretins. God helps those who help themselves!

It reminds me of that joke. The village is flooded and, as the waters rose, a solitary man clambered onto the roof of his submerged house. A few minutes later, a man came by in a rowing boat and cried up to the man; "You there, jump into my boat and I shall row you to safety". But the man on the roof cried back; "No thank-you. I am a Christian. I go to Church every Sunday and I say my prayers every night. The Lord shall save me". And so the man in the boat shrugged and rowed away.

Ten minutes later and the water had already reached the top windows of the house when a second man came by in a speed boat and cried up to the man; "You there, step into my boat and I shall take you to safety". But the man on the roof said; "No thank-you. I am a Christian. I go to Church every Sunday and I say my prayers every night. The Lord shall save me". And so the man in the speed boat shrugged and sped away.

Fifteen minutes later and the water had risen so high that the man on his roof was now balancing on his chimney. Suddenly, a helicopter hovered over head and dropped down a rope ladder. The pilot shouted down to the man; "You there, climb up that ladder and I shall fly you to safety". But the man called back; "No thank-you. I am a Christian. I go to Church every Sunday and I say my prayers every night. The Lord shall save me." And so the pilot shrugged and flew away.

Five minutes later the waters rose and engulfed the house and the man drowned.

When he arrived at the Pearly Gates, St Peter brought the man before God and the man said: "Lord, I was always a good Christian. I went to Church every Sunday and said my prayers every night. Why didst thou foresake me?" And God replied:

"I SENT YOU A ROW BOAT, A SPEED BOAT AND A FRIGGIN' CHOPPER! WHAT MORE DID YOU WANT???"

Lol. I knew that joke. But, thinking about it, I also have christians friends who probably don't know it (I should think about telling them, one day), and have the same kind of reasonning that those muslims in Jen's story, often refering to "God's will" in some situations where they could actually "help themselves" - though I *hope* they would not follow it in such a dramatic case...

It scares the life out of me to think that they are 'out there' and putting my hubby at risk..he said if anyone gets in the chopper and they are wearing a turban then he's outta there pronto.
